ACWA Power Reaches Major Milestones in Africa’s Clean Energy Landscape
Redstone Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) plant in South Africa built by SEPCOIII Electric Power Construction Corporation, a subsidiary of POWERCHINA has reached 50 MW and is set to achieve its full 100 MW capacity in the coming days.
ACWA Power, a global leader in sustainable water desalination and renewable energy, has announced a significant achievement at its Redstone Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) plant in South Africa. Currently generating 50 MW of power, the plant is set to reach its full capacity of 100 MW in the coming days, marking a pivotal milestone in ACWA Power’s mission to boost renewable energy on the African continent. In collaboration with Herlogas and SEPCOIII, the synchronization of Redstone CSP to South Africa’s national grid reinforces ACWA Power’s influence as a major private investor in Africa’s green energy sector. The plant’s output will supply clean power to nearly 200,000 households, contributing to a substantial reduction in carbon emissions.
In Egypt, ACWA Power’s Kom Ombo Photovoltaic (PV) plant has also hit full production at 200 MW, reaching over 200,000 households and further expanding ACWA Power’s African portfolio. With an impressive $7 billion invested in renewable energy projects across Africa, the company is redefining the continent’s clean energy and water solutions through initiatives in solar power, green hydrogen, and water desalination.
Recently, ACWA Power has established strategic agreements with the Egyptian and Tunisian governments to develop green hydrogen projects, showcasing its commitment to sustainable development and environmental stewardship in Africa. These partnerships are part of a broader initiative to lead the charge in green hydrogen production, a goal backed by its work with the NEOM Green Hydrogen Company (NGHC), expected to reach commercial-scale production by 2026. This advancement aligns with ACWA Power’s reputation for record-low costs in power generation and water desalination.
As the world’s lowest-cost producer of levelized water tariffs, ACWA Power is in a prime position to deliver affordable, clean water across Africa, ensuring accessible resources for millions. Following the company’s ambitious expansion plan, announced in 2023, ACWA Power aims to triple its operational scale. This growth underscores its commitment to economic progress and social advancement through sustainable energy, solidifying its role as a transformative force in the global renewable energy sector. With proven expertise and a steadfast vision, ACWA Power is positioned to drive long-term impact across Africa and beyond, meeting the rising demand for sustainable infrastructure and delivering affordable, reliable solutions for communities worldwide.
